Tabs and Badges in Blog Posts
Most blog posts are written for one imaginary reader. Real audiences contain multiple segments — beginners and experts, developers and marketers, Windows users and macOS users. Forcing all segments through the same linear reading experience creates a post that is perfect for no one.
Tabs solve this. Badges set expectations. Together, they turn a generic post into a personalized experience — without requiring the writer to publish multiple versions of the same article.
Part 1 — Tabs: Audience Segmentation Within a Single Post
A Tabs component splits one section of a blog post into mutually exclusive panels. The reader chooses which panel applies to them and reads only that. All other panels collapse.
The strategic insight: this reduces the effective word count for every reader while keeping the total content depth of the post high. A 3,000-word post with three audience segments effectively reads as a 1,000-word post for each segment — which dramatically improves completion rate and dwell time quality.

When to Use Tabs in a Blog Post

Use Tabs when the content is mutually exclusive — only one option applies to any given reader:
- OS-specific instructions: Windows vs. macOS vs. Linux install steps
- Skill level: Beginner explanation vs. Advanced explanation of the same concept
- Tool alternatives: Plugin A vs. Plugin B installation — reader uses one, not both
- Comparison: Before/After, Good Example/Bad Example, Do/Don't
- Role-based guidance: Developer steps vs. Editor steps vs. Admin steps
Do not use Tabs when:
- Content is sequential — the reader needs to read all panels in order. Use numbered steps.
- Content is complementary — all panels together form one complete picture. Use a list or sections.
- There are only 2 very short items — an inline table comparison is cleaner and less interactive overhead.
- The tab labels would require the reader to know which one applies to them before reading. If the choice is not obvious, tabs are disorienting.
Part 2 — The "Before vs. After" Tab Pattern
This is the most powerful tabs pattern in blog writing. It is not about audience segmentation — it is about demonstrating contrast without requiring the reader to scroll between two distant examples.
The "Before/After" tab pattern appears in the highest-performing SEO content across all niches:

- "Welcome to our website" wastes the first 5 words — the most valuable real estate in a SERP listing.
- No target keyword appears in the first 60 characters.
- "Click here" is a dead call-to-action — it describes the action, not the benefit.
- At 155 characters, it fills the entire slot with zero user value.

Part 3 — Tabs Implementation in MDX
The Tabs component requires an import at the top of the file. Add it immediately after your frontmatter block, before the heading.

If your tutorial has 6 steps and each step has OS-specific sub-instructions, add groupId="operating-system" to each Tabs group. When the reader selects "macOS" in Step 1, every other Tabs group on the page automatically switches to "macOS." This is the difference between a good technical blog post and an exceptional one.
The reader's choice is also saved in their browser's localStorage — they return to the page already on their selected tab.
Part 4 — Badges: Setting Expectations Before Reading
A badge is an inline label that signals the status of content before the reader commits to reading it. It answers the implicit question every reader has at the top of a page: "Is this for me? Is this current? Should I trust this?"
